About projectGATO

#projectGATO is the documentation and recording project of two Gato class WW2 US submarine wrecks in the Southern Philippines; the USS Robalo and the USS Flier.

The USS Robalo wreck

The USS Robalo was recorded missing in July 1944 during her third war patrol. Locate by the Sea Scan Survey team in 2019, she now rests in around 70m of water. The sinking is thought to be due to a mine strike in the rear of the vessel.

The USS Flier wreck

The USS Flier sank in August 1944, following a mine strike to the forward starboard side of the sub. The sinking was survived by 8 US soldiers who escaped enemy capture for several weeks following the sinking before returning to the US.
